Baku, March 13, 2025 – The Europe Today: President Ilham Aliyev reaffirmed Azerbaijan’s commitment to peace in the South Caucasus while addressing the opening ceremony of the 12th Global Baku Forum. He emphasized the importance of looking towards the future while acknowledging past tragedies, including the genocide of Khojaly.
“We will not forget the genocide of Khojaly, when Armenians killed 613 innocent people, more than 60 children, and more than 100 women. But at the same time, we need to look to the future,” President Aliyev stated.
Highlighting Azerbaijan’s proactive stance in fostering peace, President Aliyev noted that his country was the initiator of the peace process between Azerbaijan and Armenia. “Actually, Azerbaijan was even the author of the draft peace agreement, which today is being discussed between Azerbaijan and Armenia, and largely agreed,” he added.
The Global Baku Forum, a platform that brings together world leaders, policymakers, and experts, serves as an avenue for discussing pressing regional and global issues. This year’s forum has placed particular emphasis on peace and stability in the South Caucasus.
President Aliyev’s remarks underscored Azerbaijan’s determination to achieve lasting peace while ensuring that historical grievances are acknowledged and remembered. The ongoing discussions on the draft peace agreement between Azerbaijan and Armenia mark a significant step toward reconciliation in the region.
