French Prime Minister François Bayrou Ousted After Losing Confidence Vote

Bayrou

Paris, September 9, 2025 – The Europe Today: The administration of French Prime Minister François Bayrou has officially collapsed following a decisive vote of no confidence in the National Assembly.

Bayrou’s minority government suffered a heavy defeat in Monday’s session, with 364 lawmakers voting against and only 194 in favor, sealing the fate of the prime minister who had staked his leadership on controversial austerity measures.

The no-confidence motion was triggered after Bayrou presented a sweeping budget plan that included deep spending cuts and tax increases aimed at addressing France’s growing debt burden. However, the proposals met fierce resistance across the political spectrum, with opposition parties condemning them as socially unjust and economically damaging.

Following the vote, Bayrou is expected to tender his resignation to President Emmanuel Macron, who now faces the challenge of appointing a new prime minister to lead a fractured parliament. This marks the third time since 2024 that Macron’s government has been forced to change leadership, underlining the ongoing political instability in France.

Analysts warn that the collapse of Bayrou’s government could heighten uncertainty in both domestic politics and financial markets, while fueling calls for snap elections from opposition leaders.
