Paris, October 6, 2025 – The Europe Today: French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu resigned on Monday, just hours after unveiling a cabinet composed largely of familiar faces and less than a month after his appointment, failing to resolve the ongoing political deadlock in the country.
The resignation comes amid mounting pressure from the far-right National Rally, which has called on President Emmanuel Macron to dissolve the National Assembly and seek a fresh mandate.
Lecornu’s brief tenure set multiple records in French political history. He became the shortest-serving Prime Minister, holding office for only 27 days. His time without an officially functioning government was the longest at 26 days, and his newly formed cabinet became the shortest-lived government, as he resigned merely twelve hours after announcing the team. Lecornu also became the only Prime Minister in history not to deliver a general policy statement.
Observers say Lecornu’s resignation underscores the deep divisions within the French political landscape and highlights the challenges faced by President Macron in forming a stable government.
