Carney

Paris, January 7, 2026 – The Europe Today: On Tuesday, on the sidelines of the Coalition of the Willing meeting in Paris, France, Prime Minister of Canada Mark Carney held talks with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte to discuss measures for enhancing Euro-Atlantic security amid ongoing global challenges.

During the discussions, the leaders addressed the continuing threats posed by Russia’s aggression against Ukraine and emphasized the importance of NATO’s support in advancing Ukraine’s peace and security, including through robust security guarantees.

Prime Minister Carney reaffirmed that NATO remains a cornerstone of transatlantic security and reiterated Canada’s commitment to strengthening the Alliance and enhancing its capabilities. In support of Ukraine, he highlighted Canada’s total contribution of approximately $892 million toward NATO’s Prioritised Ukraine Requirements List (PURL), which provides critical and urgently needed equipment to Ukraine.

The talks also covered Canada’s renewed mission to rebuild, rearm, and reinvest in the Canadian Armed Forces, including plans to increase defence spending over the next decade. The Prime Minister and Secretary General discussed the renewal of Operation REASSURANCE, a Canadian-led multinational brigade deterring Russian aggression in the Baltics and defending NATO’s eastern flank.

Prime Minister Carney also underscored the strategic importance of the Arctic to Alliance security, noting that Arctic Allies are enhancing their defence capabilities across the region.

The two leaders agreed to maintain close communication and continue collaboration on key security priorities.
