Ashgabat, January 13, 2026 – The Europe Today: On January 12, 2026, Turkmenistan’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Rashid Meredov met with Kakha Imnadze, Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General and Head of the UN Regional Centre for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia, to discuss ongoing cooperation and regional diplomatic initiatives.
During the meeting, both sides reaffirmed Turkmenistan’s commitment to strengthening its strategic partnership with the United Nations, particularly in the context of implementing objectives outlined in UN General Assembly resolutions adopted in 2025, which were initiated by Turkmenistan.
The diplomats reviewed the work of the UN Regional Centre for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia, summarized achievements from the past year, and discussed priorities and next steps for 2026. Discussions also focused on promoting regional programs and projects involving all five Central Asian countries.
Special attention was given to Turkmenistan’s initiative to establish a University of Peace and Neutrality in cooperation with the United Nations. This initiative was announced by the President of Turkmenistan during the International Forum on the International Year of Peace and Trust, International Neutrality Day, and the 30th anniversary of Turkmenistan’s permanent neutrality held in Ashgabat on December 12, 2025.
The initiative, supported by all forum participants, was incorporated into the Ashgabat Declaration and formally submitted as an official document to the 80th session of the UN General Assembly.
Both parties agreed to continue active collaboration to advance the initiative and further regional peace and stability efforts.
