Indonesia Reaffirms Principled Diplomacy in Support of Palestinian Independence: FM Sugiono

Indonesia

Jakarta, January 14, 2026 – The Europe Today: Minister of Foreign Affairs Sugiono reaffirmed that Indonesia’s diplomacy will always be guided by principle and courage in advancing the cause of a peaceful and independent Palestine.

Delivering the 2026 Annual Press Statement of the Minister of Foreign Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Jakarta on Wednesday, Sugiono said that for Indonesia, the independence and sovereignty of Palestine form part of the country’s constitutional mandate that must be consistently upheld.

“Palestine is a reminder that diplomacy must never lose its conscience,” he emphasized.

Sugiono said Indonesia’s commitment is reflected in its active engagement across various international forums aimed at ending violence, restoring humanitarian conditions, and realizing a peaceful and sovereign Palestinian state.

He noted that Indonesia has chosen to play an active role in international initiatives, including serving as co-chair of the Working Group that produced the New York Declaration and contributing to efforts to advance the implementation of the Sharm El Sheikh Peace Summit.

In addition, Indonesia has been involved in discussions on the establishment of an International Stabilization Force (ISF) as a transitional mechanism to ensure a permanent ceasefire and facilitate unhindered humanitarian access to Gaza.

“However, the ISF is a temporary instrument; peace through the Two-State Solution remains the ultimate goal,” Sugiono stressed.

The foreign minister further underscored that Indonesia’s diplomacy within the Islamic world is being strengthened through a focused, well-planned, and cross-sectoral approach. Drawing on Indonesia’s experience as the world’s largest Muslim-majority country and its strong tradition of moderation, he said Indonesia has both the credibility and the responsibility to foster more substantive cooperation.

To support this effort, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has developed a Roadmap for Cooperation with the Islamic World, providing a structured, long-term, and results-oriented framework to ensure cooperation is consistent, measurable, and aligned with national interests.

Sugiono added that strengthening Indonesia’s engagement with the Islamic world is also being translated into concrete initiatives. One such initiative, long envisioned by the President, is the establishment of an Indonesia Hajj Village in Makkah, aimed at enhancing state capacity and demonstrating the government’s commitment to improving services and facilities for Indonesian Hajj and Umrah pilgrims.
