Indonesia Condemns Alleged Abuse of Gaza Flotilla Volunteers by Israeli Forces

Indonesia

Jakarta, May 22, 2026 – The Europe Today: Indonesia has strongly condemned the violence and alleged abuse inflicted on volunteers participating in the Gaza-bound Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF) humanitarian mission, who were detained by Israeli forces earlier this week.

Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono said on Thursday that the Indonesian government firmly denounces the treatment received by the volunteers during their detention.

“The Indonesian government once again reiterates its condemnation of the inhumane treatment received by the volunteers during their detention,” Sugiono stated.

He said the reported acts constituted a violation of international law, particularly as the volunteers were engaged in a humanitarian mission aimed at delivering aid to Palestinians in Gaza.

“Actions that degrade the dignity of civilians during a humanitarian mission constitute a serious violation of international humanitarian law and thus cannot be tolerated,” he added.

Sugiono confirmed that all nine Indonesian volunteers detained by Israeli authorities had been released.

Following their release, the volunteers were travelling to Istanbul before boarding onward flights to Indonesia, he said.

“The Indonesian government will continue to oversee this repatriation process until all Indonesian citizens return home safely,” the minister affirmed.

The Gaza flotilla volunteers were released from prison in Israel on Thursday after their ships were intercepted by Israeli forces earlier this week.

According to reports, the detainees allegedly faced inhumane treatment during custody, including beatings, electric shocks, and the use of rubber bullets.

A video circulated on social media also purportedly showed Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir verbally insulting pro-Palestinian activists who were tied up and forced to kneel during detention.
