Indonesian, Japanese Navies Strengthen Maritime Defense Cooperation During Warship Visit

Jakarta, May 24, 2026 – The Europe Today: The Indonesian Navy strengthened diplomatic and military ties with the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force during the visit of Japanese destroyer JS Ikazuchi (DD-107) to Tanjung Priok Port on May 22.

According to a statement issued by the Indonesian Navy on Saturday, Assistant Operations Chief of Regional Naval Command III, Boy Yopi Hamel, welcomed the Japanese delegation arriving aboard JS Ikazuchi at Pier 107 in North Jakarta.

The visit formed part of a courtesy call by the Japanese navy aimed at enhancing bilateral naval cooperation and strengthening coordination on regional maritime security.

Uki Prasetia said the presence of the Japanese warship was expected to reinforce synergy between the two navies in addressing maritime security challenges across the region.

The Japanese delegation, led by Nobukazu Ryuso, received an official welcome from Indonesian naval authorities during the visit.

The welcoming ceremony featured the traditional “Tapak Dara” dance and was conducted in a cordial atmosphere reflecting the friendly relations between Indonesia and Japan.

Following the ceremony, officials from both navies held closed-door discussions on a range of defense cooperation initiatives, including the possible expansion of joint military exercises.

Rear Admiral Uki Prasetia noted that broader military cooperation with Japan would help strengthen Indonesia’s maritime defense capabilities while also reinforcing regional security partnerships.

He expressed hope that the engagement would further deepen Indonesia-Japan relations and enhance cooperation in safeguarding maritime territories and strategic waters across the region.
