Foreign Tourist Overnight Stays in Finland Rise Four Percent in April

Finland

Helsinki, May 29, 2026 – The Europe Today: The number of overnight stays by foreign tourists in Finland increased by four percent in April compared to the same period last year, according to new figures released by Statistics Finland on Thursday.

The data showed continued growth in international tourism, while overnight stays by domestic travelers remained largely unchanged from spring 2025 levels.

Visitors from neighboring Sweden accounted for the highest number of foreign overnight stays, followed by tourists from Germany and the United States.

The Uusimaa region, which includes Helsinki, recorded the largest share of foreign tourism activity in April, with more than 500,000 overnight stays. This represented a five percent increase compared to the previous year.

Meanwhile, Lapland recorded the second-highest number of overnight stays at around 200,000, although the figure marked a six percent decline from April 2025.

Nationwide, the average hotel occupancy rate stood at just under 50 percent, while the average hotel room price reached 113 euros per night.

Accommodation prices remained highest in Lapland, where an average hotel room cost approximately 144 euros per night.

Overall, accommodation establishments across Finland recorded nearly 1.5 million overnight stays during April, including around 330,000 stays by foreign tourists. Total overnight stays nationwide increased by one percent year-on-year.

The tourism sector could receive an additional boost in the future following a proposal unveiled last week by Finland’s Education Ministry to revise school holiday schedules.

The proposal suggests shortening summer holidays while introducing an additional week-long break in April, a move that could potentially encourage more domestic travel among families with children.
