Foreign Tourism Growth Lifts Finland’s Overnight Stays in April

Helsinki, June 1, 2026 – The Europe Today: Finland recorded a rise in accommodation activity in April 2026, driven by growing numbers of international visitors, according to preliminary data released by Statistics Finland.

Accommodation establishments across the country registered approximately 1.48 million overnight stays during April, marking a 1 per cent increase compared to the same month last year.

The growth was largely fueled by foreign tourism. International visitors accounted for around 330,000 overnight stays, representing a 4 per cent increase from April 2025. Meanwhile, domestic tourism remained stable, with Finnish residents recording approximately 1.15 million overnight stays, a figure largely unchanged from the previous year.

Among international markets, visitors from Sweden generated the highest number of overnight stays, followed by travellers from Germany and the United States.

Regionally, Uusimaa maintained its position as Finland’s leading tourism destination, recording approximately 510,000 overnight stays during the month, a 5 per cent increase year-on-year.

Lapland ranked second with around 190,000 overnight stays. However, the region experienced a 6 per cent decline compared with April 2025, making it one of the few major tourism destinations in the country to register a decrease.

Hotels nationwide reported an average room occupancy rate of 47 per cent during April. The average hotel room price stood at €113 per night, while Lapland continued to command the highest accommodation rates in the country, with average room prices reaching €144 per night.

The latest figures indicate that international demand for travel to Finland continued to strengthen during the spring season, helping offset mixed regional performances and supporting overall growth in the country’s tourism sector, while domestic travel activity remained broadly stable.
