Singapore

Jakarta, July 6, 2026 – The Europe Today: Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto and Singaporean Prime Minister Lawrence Wong on Monday reaffirmed the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN)’s commitment to resolving disputes peacefully through dialogue and diplomacy, underscoring the importance of stability and cooperation at both regional and global levels.

Speaking at a joint press statement at the Merdeka Palace following the annual Singapore–Indonesia Leaders’ Retreat, President Prabowo said the two leaders held comprehensive discussions covering bilateral cooperation as well as regional and international developments.

He said both countries reiterated ASEAN’s longstanding position that all disputes should be settled through peaceful means, emphasizing that the principle should be upheld not only within Southeast Asia but across all regions.

President Prabowo described Indonesia and Singapore as close partners with shared interests in promoting regional stability and economic prosperity. He stressed the importance of protecting these common interests through mutually beneficial cooperation.

The Indonesian president said the two leaders had held an intensive, productive, open and forward-looking discussion, agreeing to address any future misunderstandings transparently and in the spirit of friendship.

The leaders also reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining the Strait of Malacca as an open, secure and accessible international shipping route, recognizing its strategic importance to global trade and regional connectivity.

As a key outcome of the retreat, Indonesia and Singapore announced 26 agreements and memoranda of understanding (MoUs) spanning a wide range of sectors. The agreements include 18 government-to-government (G2G) accords and eight business-to-business (B2B) partnerships aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation.

Prime Minister Wong was received by President Prabowo at Jakarta’s Merdeka Palace for the annual Leaders’ Retreat, which serves as a key platform for enhancing strategic ties between the two neighbouring countries.

This year’s meeting also marked an important step in preparations for the 60th anniversary of formal diplomatic relations between Indonesia and Singapore, which will be commemorated in 2027.
