Hanoi, September 15, 2026 – The Europe Today: King Maha Vajiralongkorn Phra Vajiraklaochaoyuhua of Thailand and Queen Suthida Bajrasudhabimalalakshana arrived in Hanoi on September 14, beginning a three-day state visit to Vietnam at the invitation of General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee and President Tô Lâm and his spouse.
The state visit, scheduled from September 14 to 16, carries particular significance as Vietnam and Thailand are marking the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations this year. The two countries established diplomatic ties in 1976.
The visit represents an important milestone in bilateral relations and is the first state visit to Vietnam by King Maha Vajiralongkorn since he ascended the throne. He had previously visited Vietnam in 1992 and 1997 while serving as Crown Prince.
The Thai royal couple was welcomed upon arrival at Noi Bai International Airport by senior Vietnamese officials, including Le Khanh Hai, Chairman of the President’s Office; Vu Dai Thang, Chairman of the Hanoi People’s Committee; Deputy Foreign Minister Dang Hoang Giang; and Vietnamese Ambassador to Thailand Pham Viet Hung.
The visit is expected to provide fresh momentum to the longstanding friendship and cooperation between Vietnam and Thailand and further strengthen political trust and high-level exchanges between the two countries.
Vietnam and Thailand have continued to deepen their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, with both sides seeking to expand cooperation and economic connectivity and translate leaders’ commitments into concrete outcomes. The two countries have also set ambitious goals for increasing bilateral trade and promoting balanced and sustainable economic cooperation.
The state visit is therefore being viewed as an important opportunity to reinforce bilateral relations, expand practical cooperation and open new avenues for collaboration across areas of mutual interest as the two nations commemorate five decades of diplomatic ties.
