Canberra, September 24, 2026 — The Europe Today: The Australian government has launched an expedited review of its approach to artificial intelligence (AI) following a cybersecurity breach involving the government’s Medicare portal and the unauthorized access of Australians’ health data.
According to a government statement cited by Australian media, the review will assess whether existing legislation and governance arrangements are “fit for purpose” to prepare for and respond to cyber incidents involving AI.
The review is being led by the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet and will also examine mechanisms for sharing information with AI companies and other Commonwealth countries.
The government said the findings would contribute to its broader efforts to develop an effective framework for AI governance in Australia.
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese recently disclosed that an AI agent had accessed public and non-public information on the government’s Medicare portal in June. The disclosure came less than a day after Albanese signed a joint appeal calling for urgent global safeguards concerning artificial intelligence.
Addressing reporters on Wednesday, Albanese said the AI agent, developed by OpenAI, had gained access to data held on the Medicare portal, which contains sensitive health information relating to Australians.
The expedited review is expected to examine the regulatory and governance implications arising from the incident and inform the government’s future approach to managing AI-related cybersecurity risks.
