Islamabad, March 09, 2024, The Europe Today: Asif Ali Zardari, the co-chairperson of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and the coalition government’s candidate for the head of state, has triumphed in the presidential elections, paving the way for a historic second term as the President of Pakistan.
Zardari’s resounding success was evident as he secured an overwhelming mandate, bagging a total of 255 votes in the combined sessions of the Senate and National Assembly. In contrast, the candidate fielded by the SIC (Struggle for Islamic Change) and chief of the PkMAP (Pashtunkhwa Milli Awami Party), Mahmood Khan Achakzai, trailed behind with 91 votes.
The sweeping victory for Zardari extended across most provincial assemblies, with the exception of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) Assembly, where he failed to secure the majority vote. In K-P, Zardari garnered 17 votes, while Achakzai managed to secure 91 votes.
However, in the pivotal Punjab Assembly, Zardari demonstrated his widespread appeal by securing a substantial 246 votes, leaving his opponent with 100 votes. The former president’s success in Punjab, along with support from other provincial assemblies, solidifies his mandate and underscores the broad-based endorsement of his candidacy.
The election results reflect a significant mandate for Zardari and the PPP, indicating the support of parliamentary members from various regions of Pakistan. As the President-elect, Zardari is poised to lead the country for a historic second term, with expectations high for him to continue addressing critical issues and steering Pakistan through a path of progress and stability.
The victory marks a momentous occasion for the PPP and its coalition partners, reaffirming their commitment to governance and signaling a new chapter in Pakistan’s political landscape under the leadership of Asif Ali Zardari.
