New York, September 24, 2024 — The Europe Today: His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, reaffirmed Brunei’s unwavering commitment to the multilateral system, emphasizing the nation’s contributions to peacekeeping missions and its initiatives on poverty alleviation and education during a meeting with United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres at the UN Headquarters in New York.
In his titah (royal speech), His Majesty highlighted that Brunei Darussalam, which is celebrating the 40th anniversary of its UN membership this year, has greatly benefited from its involvement in the international body. He praised the UN’s vital support in fostering peace and development not only in Brunei but across the ASEAN region.
His Majesty emphasized ASEAN’s progress in community-building efforts, bolstered by cooperation with Dialogue Partners, and welcomed the recent admission of Timor-Leste into ASEAN. He also addressed the ongoing political situation in Myanmar, advocating for diplomatic solutions under the framework of ASEAN’s Five-Point Consensus.
The meeting underscored Brunei’s enduring commitment to global peace and development through active participation in multilateral forums, particularly the United Nations.
