New York, October 3, 2024 – The Europe Today: Fu Cong, China’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, has called for renewed efforts to improve the global governance system and rectify the historical injustices faced by Africa. Speaking at the UN Security Council briefing on cooperation between the United Nations and the African Union, Fu emphasized the need for fairer international representation and rule-setting for African nations.
Fu acknowledged the significant strides made by African countries since their emergence from colonial rule, including their growing influence within the United Nations. However, he stressed that the current global order remains imbalanced, with African countries still facing inequalities in access to decision-making power and opportunities.
During last week’s General Debate at the 79th session of the UN General Assembly, African leaders echoed calls for reforms to the global governance system to address these long-standing injustices. Fu reaffirmed China’s strong support for these demands, emphasizing China’s commitment to ensuring that developing countries, particularly in Africa, have greater representation in global decision-making.
China advocates for reforms within the international financial architecture to allow multilateral institutions to better support Africa’s development. Fu also called for special arrangements to address Africa’s aspirations in the reform of the UN Security Council.
Fu outlined four key areas for enhanced cooperation between the UN and the African Union: ending conflicts and ensuring security across Africa, supporting African-led peacekeeping operations, addressing the root causes of conflict through development, and improving global governance structures to rectify historical imbalances.
The ambassador underscored Africa’s vision for modernization, as outlined in the UN Agenda 2063, and pledged China’s ongoing support for the continent’s efforts to address major global challenges such as poverty, security, climate change, and development.
