Indonesia, US to Bolster Digital Technology Cooperation

Jakarta, November 20, 2024 — The Europe Today: In a strategic move to strengthen digital technology cooperation, Indonesia’s Communication and Digital Affairs Minister Meutya Hafid met with U.S. Under Secretary of Commerce for International Trade Marisa Lago on Monday, November 18. The meeting, which was also attended by U.S. Ambassador to Indonesia Kamala Shirin Lakhdhir, focused on enhancing collaboration between Indonesia and the United States in key areas driving inclusivity and economic growth.

“This meeting is a strategic step in strengthening relations between Indonesia and the United States, particularly in the field of digital technology, which is a key driver of inclusivity and economic growth,” Minister Hafid said in a statement released by her ministry on Tuesday.

During the discussions, both parties covered a wide range of topics, including advancements in artificial intelligence (AI), the development of smart cities, and strategies to foster inclusive and equitable digital transformation across Indonesia. Hafid highlighted that 12 American companies have expressed strong interest in collaborating on smart city initiatives and are planning visits to Jakarta, Denpasar, and Nusantara.

Minister Hafid expressed optimism that this increased interest would lead to tangible investments, particularly in Indonesia’s new capital city, Nusantara. “We greatly appreciate the support of the U.S. Trade and Development Agency in advancing digital infrastructure in Indonesia, including smart cities,” she noted, emphasizing the importance of expanding connectivity and information technology access for achieving digital transformation.

The collaboration will also encompass a joint study to enhance cybersecurity measures and promote AI-based technology in Indonesia. Hafid underscored the necessity of adopting a responsible and inclusive approach to AI implementation, aligned with sustainability principles and a focus on positive societal impacts.

“Through this partnership, we aim to ensure that AI not only drives innovation but also contributes to sustainable socioeconomic progress,” Hafid concluded.
