PM Shehbaz Praises PCB Chief for Resolute Stance on ICC Champions Trophy 2025

Lahore, December 8, 2024 – The Europe Today: Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif has praised Chairman Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Mohsin Naqvi for his resolute and principled position regarding the hosting of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 in Pakistan.

During a meeting at the Prime Minister’s residence on Sunday, Naqvi briefed the premier on recent developments surrounding the tournament. Scheduled to take place in Pakistan in February-March 2025, the event has faced challenges following the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI)’s refusal to send its team to Pakistan, citing the lack of a no-objection certificate (NOC) from the Indian government. The BCCI has proposed a hybrid model, suggesting that Indian matches and the final be hosted in a neutral venue such as the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

In response, Naqvi advocated for a reciprocal arrangement, urging the International Cricket Council (ICC) to grant Pakistan similar concessions for ICC events hosted in India.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif lauded Naqvi’s approach, describing it as reflective of the aspirations of the 240 million Pakistanis. “Pakistan’s prestige is the first and foremost, while everything else is secondary,” the prime minister emphasized. He added that Naqvi had effectively represented the sentiments of the nation on the global stage.

Mohsin Naqvi, who also serves as the country’s interior minister, assured the prime minister that the PCB is fully prepared to host the ICC Champions Trophy, with all necessary arrangements already in place. He expressed optimism about the event, stating, “The PCB is committed to ensuring that both Pakistan and cricket emerge as winners. The nation can expect positive news about the ICC Champions Trophy in Pakistan.”

The ICC Champions Trophy 2025 represents a significant opportunity for Pakistan to showcase its cricketing capabilities and bolster its international sporting reputation.
