Beijing, January 10, 2025 – The Europe Today: Chinese President Xi Jinping has called on law societies to play a more active role as bridges in advancing the country’s legal system, in a letter addressed to the ninth congress of the China Law Society, which opened on Friday.
In his message, Xi, who also serves as the general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission, emphasized the importance of law societies in breaking new ground for the legal profession and governance. He urged them to contribute to the comprehensive advancement of law-based governance in China.
Xi highlighted that law societies must uphold the Party’s overall leadership and serve the broader objectives of both the Party and the nation. He called for sustained efforts in enhancing legal research, supporting the practice of the rule of law, raising public awareness, and fostering legal professionals’ development.
“The role of legal scholars and practitioners is vital in consolidating confidence in the rule of law and ensuring the advancement of law-based governance,” Xi stated.
The congress saw remarks from Chen Wenqing, a member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and head of the Commission for Political and Legal Affairs. Chen urged legal professionals to focus on ensuring sound legislation, enforcing laws impartially, and promoting society-wide adherence to the law, all critical to advancing Chinese modernization.
Wang Chen, the director of the China Law Society, chaired the meeting and presented a work report. During the session, exemplary groups and individuals in the law society system nationwide were recognized for their contributions.
The event underscored the Party’s commitment to strengthening legal frameworks, reinforcing the rule of law, and ensuring the continued modernization of China’s legal system.
