Riyadh, January 12, 2025 – The Europe Today: Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan on Sunday urged the lifting of sanctions on Syria, emphasizing their detrimental impact on the country’s development and reconstruction efforts.
Prince Faisal made the remarks during a press briefing following high-level meetings on Syria’s future, held in the Saudi capital. The meetings brought together top diplomats from several regional countries to discuss pathways to stability and recovery in Syria, which has been devastated by over a decade of civil war.
“We stressed the importance of lifting unilateral and international sanctions imposed on Syria, as their continuation hinders the aspirations of the Syrian people to achieve development and reconstruction,” Prince Faisal stated.
The Saudi foreign minister underscored the need for the international community to prioritize the well-being of the Syrian people, who continue to face significant economic and humanitarian challenges.
The call for the removal of sanctions aligns with broader regional efforts to support Syria’s new administration under Ahmed al Sharaa, which recently took office following the ouster of Bashar al Assad. The new government has also appealed for sanctions relief as a critical step toward national recovery and stability.
The Riyadh meetings are expected to be followed by international discussions involving key global stakeholders, signaling growing momentum toward resolving Syria’s long-standing crisis and enabling its reconstruction.
