Turkmenistan’s National Commission for UNESCO Reviews 2024 Achievements, Sets Priorities for 2025

Ashgabat, February 16, 2025 – The Europe Today: The National Commission of Turkmenistan for UNESCO convened a final meeting in Ashgabat to review the outcomes of joint cooperation in 2024 and outline key priorities for 2025, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan.

Opening the session, Foreign Minister Rashid Meredov reaffirmed UNESCO’s strategic importance in Turkmenistan’s international partnerships. A major highlight of 2024 was the 300th anniversary of the birth of poet Makhtumkuli Fragi, which was included in UNESCO’s List of Significant Dates for 2024-2025. As part of the celebrations, Ashgabat hosted the 10th Meeting of the National Commissions for UNESCO of the TURKSOY Member States in May 2024.

Throughout the year, extensive consultations were conducted with UNESCO representatives through online and in-person meetings, focusing on science, education, culture, and environmental initiatives. These discussions resulted in the adoption of key documents that will guide future collaboration.

The meeting also explored Turkmenistan’s efforts to secure recognition of its national heritage on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Additionally, discussions centered on strengthening the country’s role within UNESCO’s structural divisions and preparing for joint events under the “International Year of Peace and Trust” in 2025.

The event was attended by Deputy Chairmen of the Cabinet of Ministers of Turkmenistan, the Executive Secretary of the National Commission for UNESCO, and senior officials from various ministries and departments, highlighting the country’s commitment to fostering international cultural and scientific cooperation.
