Islamabad, April 20, 2025 – The Europe Today: Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has officially resumed its direct flights from Lahore to Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, in a significant move aimed at boosting regional connectivity, promoting tourism, and fostering stronger bilateral relations between the two countries.
A special ceremony to mark the relaunch of the Lahore-Baku route was held on Sunday, with Pakistan’s Minister for Defence and Aviation, Khawaja Muhammad Asif, gracing the occasion as the chief guest. The event was also attended by senior PIA officials and representatives from the Embassy of Azerbaijan in Pakistan.
PIA will now operate twice-weekly flights on the Lahore (LHE) to Baku (GYD) route, with departures scheduled every Sunday and Wednesday. This initiative complements the existing services of Azerbaijan Airlines (AZAL), which already operates flights to Pakistan’s key cities of Islamabad, Lahore, and Karachi.
The relaunch of this direct air link is part of PIA’s broader strategy to promote cross-border tourism and enhance connectivity between Pakistan and Azerbaijan. By facilitating easier travel for both Pakistani and Azerbaijani nationals, the route is expected to contribute to cultural exchange, tourism growth, and economic cooperation.
“This renewed connection offers Pakistani travelers direct access to Baku’s renowned architecture, historical landmarks, and vibrant cultural scene,” a PIA spokesperson stated. “At the same time, Azerbaijani visitors will now enjoy a convenient gateway to explore Pakistan’s historical cities and cultural heritage.”
Officials noted that this direct air corridor is also poised to significantly boost trade and investment prospects between the two nations, while laying the groundwork for increased commerce with other Central Asian states.
The launch is aligned with Pakistan’s broader foreign policy objective of strengthening diplomatic and economic ties with Central Asia, with a particular focus on deepening cooperation with the Republic of Azerbaijan.
“Strengthening ties with Azerbaijan is a vital component of our regional strategy,” Minister Asif remarked. “As Pakistan emerges as a strategic hub for trade and tourism in the region, initiatives like this help us advance people-to-people connections and create new economic opportunities.”
The Lahore-Baku flight relaunch stands as a testament to the deepening relationship between Pakistan and Azerbaijan, paving the way for greater collaboration in aviation, trade, tourism, and beyond.
