Indonesia Urged to Fortify Economic Foundations Amid Global Conflicts, Says President Prabowo

Indonesia

Jakarta, April 30, 2026 – The Europe Today: President Prabowo Subianto has called for urgent measures to strengthen Indonesia’s economic foundations and mitigate the impact of ongoing global conflicts on the national economy.

Speaking on the sidelines of the launch of downstream industrial projects in Cilacap, Central Java, the President highlighted that geopolitical tensions—including conflicts in Ukraine, Gaza, and the broader Middle East—have significantly influenced global commodity markets, leading to rising prices for food and energy.

“What happens in distant parts of the world affects us,” President Prabowo said, noting that developments in Ukraine have had a direct impact on the prices of essential commodities such as corn, wheat, and oil.

To cushion the economy against external shocks, he urged national unity and collective efforts to preserve peace and stability, warning against the devastating consequences of conflict witnessed in countries such as Lebanon, Sudan, Somalia, Yemen, and Afghanistan.

“Peace is very expensive—let us protect our nation,” he stressed.

The President underscored that nationalism and unity serve as critical safeguards against external dominance, particularly by major powers seeking control over natural resources. He warned that countries unable to manage their own resources risk prolonged economic dependency and poverty.

In this context, President Prabowo reaffirmed the government’s commitment to advancing its downstreaming strategy, aimed at maximizing the added value of natural resources through domestic processing and industrial development for the benefit of the Indonesian people.

He also called on technocrats, scientists, and industry leaders to play a proactive role in strengthening Indonesia’s economic sovereignty amid increasing global uncertainty.

“Now is the time for technocrats, scientists, engineers, and professors to serve the nation and its people,” he said.

The remarks underscore Indonesia’s strategic focus on economic resilience, self-reliance, and sustainable development in the face of evolving global challenges.
