Ankara, May 1, 2026 – The Europe Today: Hakan Fidan, Foreign Minister of Türkiye, held a telephone conversation with his Greek counterpart Giorgos Gerapetritis to discuss Israel’s reported attack on the Global Sumud Flotilla, diplomatic sources said on Thursday.
According to officials from the Turkish Foreign Ministry, the discussion focused on what Ankara described as an intervention by Israeli forces targeting the aid flotilla in international waters. No further details of the conversation were disclosed.
The Global Sumud Flotilla, part of an international humanitarian initiative aimed at challenging Israel’s blockade on Gaza Strip, launched its Spring 2026 mission from Barcelona on April 12. After additional participants joined in Sicily, the convoy resumed its journey on April 26.
Flotilla organizers reported that late on April 29, Israeli forces carried out what they termed an unlawful intervention in international waters off the coast of Crete, targeting vessels carrying activists.
Officials associated with the flotilla said the mission included 345 participants from 39 countries, among them Turkish nationals.
The incident follows a previous attempt in September 2025, when Israeli forces intercepted the Global Sumud Flotilla in the Mediterranean, detaining activists and seizing vessels.
