Indonesia and Australia Reaffirm Commitment to Strengthen Transport Safety Cooperation

Indonesia

Jakarta, May 13, 2026 – The Europe Today: Indonesia and Australia have reaffirmed their shared commitment to enhancing transportation safety cooperation through the Indonesia–Australia Transport Safety Forum, held in Canberra and Sydney under the framework of the Indonesian Transport Safety Assistance Package (ITSAP).

The forum served as a high-level strategic platform aimed at strengthening bilateral collaboration in the transportation sector, particularly in advancing a safe, secure, and sustainable transport system between the two countries.

Acting Director of Indonesia’s Sea and Coast Guard, the Indonesian Sea and Coast Guard (KPLP) under the Ministry of Transportation, Triono, said in a statement on Wednesday that the forum plays a vital role in deepening institutional cooperation.

“This forum serves as a platform to strengthen bilateral collaboration in support of creating a safe, secure, and sustainable transportation system,” he stated.

He added that the discussions focused on reviewing existing cooperation between Indonesia and Australia, as well as formulating a joint action plan for 2026–2027. Key areas of engagement included shipping safety, maritime environmental protection, improved coordination in search and rescue (SAR) operations, transportation incident investigations, and the strengthening of safety policies, regulations, and institutional capacity building.

The forum also hosted a sub-working group meeting between KPLP and the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA), where both sides discussed follow-up initiatives in maritime environmental protection and operational collaboration.

Among the proposed joint programs are Basic Equipment Operation (BEO) Training, OILMAP Training, SPILL ASIA, the National Plan Exercise Australia, Regional MARPOL Exercise, and Oil Sampling Training.

Officials emphasized that these initiatives aim to enhance technical expertise, strengthen emergency response mechanisms, and improve environmental protection measures in maritime operations.

Triono further noted that the cooperation reflects a shared long-term vision to reinforce regional connectivity and support economic growth in both countries, while ensuring a resilient and sustainable transportation safety framework.
