Indonesia Records 5.83% Rise in Foreign Tourist Arrivals in May 2026

Jakarta, July 1, 2026 – The Europe Today: Indonesia welcomed 1.38 million foreign tourist arrivals in May 2026, marking a 5.83 percent increase compared with the same month last year, according to data released by Statistics Indonesia (BPS) on Wednesday.

BPS Deputy for Distribution and Services Statistics, Ateng Hartono, said total foreign tourist arrivals during the January–May 2026 period reached 6.07 million, reflecting a 7.68 percent year-on-year increase and underscoring the continued recovery and growth of the country’s tourism sector.

Malaysia remained Indonesia’s largest source of foreign visitors in May, contributing 298,210 arrivals, or 21.58 percent of the total. Australia ranked second with 155,030 visitors, accounting for 11.22 percent, followed by Singapore with 136,740 arrivals, representing 9.89 percent.

The data also showed sustained growth in domestic tourism. Domestic tourist trips reached 106.16 million in May 2026, an increase of 8.69 percent compared with the same month in 2025. During the first five months of the year, cumulative domestic travel totaled 523.22 million trips, up 2.86 percent from the corresponding period last year.

In the transportation sector, rail services recorded the highest passenger volume in May, serving 46.96 million passengers, an annual increase of 4.17 percent.

Domestic sea transport also posted positive growth, carrying 2.66 million passengers, up 6.45 percent year on year, while ferry services transported 4.51 million passengers, registering a robust 16.66 percent increase compared with May 2025.

However, domestic air travel declined by 9.22 percent to 4.11 million passengers, while international air passenger traffic fell 6.41 percent year on year to 1.65 million passengers.

Meanwhile, freight transportation by domestic sea services continued to expand, with cargo volumes rising 2.76 percent from a year earlier to reach 42.69 million metric tons in May 2026, reflecting steady activity in Indonesia’s logistics and shipping sectors.
