Beijing, June 30, 2024, The Europe Today: On Saturday evening, China’s meteorological and water resources authorities issued red alerts for mountain torrents and rainstorms in several eastern and southern regions. From 8 p.m. Saturday to 8 p.m. Sunday, high risks of mountain torrents are expected in parts of Anhui, Jiangxi, Hunan, Guangxi, and Guizhou, according to the Ministry of Water Resources and the China Meteorological Administration.
An orange alert was also issued for mountain torrents in the northwestern part of Zhejiang. Temporary heavy downpours in other areas may trigger additional torrents, warned the National Meteorological Center.
Local authorities have been advised to enhance real-time monitoring, issue flood warnings, and prepare for potential evacuations. Precautionary measures are urged to minimize risks.
The National Meteorological Center also renewed a red alert for rainstorms, with some areas in Guizhou, Guangxi, Hunan, Hubei, Jiangxi, Anhui, Zhejiang, Jiangsu, and Shanghai expecting up to 260 mm of rainfall within 24 hours.
The Zijiang River in Hunan, having experienced its third flood of 2024, reached alert levels on Saturday night, posing significant flood control challenges. In response, railway authorities suspended train services on several routes in Hunan, while other trains faced delays.
Guangxi activated a Level-IV emergency response to flooding at 6 p.m. Saturday due to anticipated heavy downpours and high disaster risks.
In northeast China, the water level at the Hutou hydrometric station on the Wusuli River reached 57.99 meters, 0.9 meters above the safety guarantee level, marking the highest recorded level since 1951. The State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters activated a Level-IV emergency response in Heilongjiang Province due to persistent downpours causing floods above safety levels in certain tributaries.
