Washington, October 4, 2024 – The Europe Today: Dockworkers across the United States called off their dayslong strike on Thursday after the International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) and port operators reached a tentative agreement on pay. The strike, which began early Tuesday, had resulted from stalled negotiations between the ILA and the United States Maritime Alliance (USMX), which represents shipping companies and terminal operators.
The labor action, involving approximately 45,000 workers, disrupted operations at major ports along the East and Gulf Coasts, including New York, Baltimore, and Houston, key hubs for handling containerized goods.
By Thursday evening, both sides issued a joint statement announcing the agreement, marking an end to the paralysis that had impacted vital shipping routes across the country.
