Putrajaya, October 24, 2024 – The Europe Today: Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan will lead Malaysia’s delegation to the 27th Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) 2024, held from October 24-26 in Apia, Samoa. Representing the Prime Minister, Mohamad will champion Malaysia’s commitment to enhancing trade, economic ties, and cooperation in key areas such as Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), climate action, technology, innovation, and energy transition.
In a statement released by the Foreign Ministry on Thursday, it was highlighted that Mohamad will focus on deepening Malaysia’s socio-economic partnerships, advocating for South-South Cooperation, and addressing the global development gap in meetings with international counterparts. Regional and international developments of bilateral interest will also be discussed.
“At the heart of Malaysia’s commitment to the Development Agenda of the Global South is the Malaysia Technical Cooperation Programme (MTCP), which remains an important platform for Malaysia to share its development experience and provide technical assistance and capacity-building for fellow Developing Countries,” the statement read. The Foreign Ministry also noted Malaysia’s ongoing contributions to the Commonwealth Fund for Technical Cooperation to strengthen capacity-building efforts within the Commonwealth.
As a member of the Commonwealth since 1957, Malaysia remains committed to upholding the principles and values enshrined in the Commonwealth Charter, working to promote greater collaboration among its 56 member nations.
Themed “One Resilient Common Future: Transforming Our Common Wealth,” CHOGM 2024 will gather Heads of State and Ministers from across the Commonwealth. Key topics of discussion include global political and economic developments, good governance, the rule of law, human rights, and climate change. The leaders are expected to adopt two major outcome documents—the CHOGM Communique and the Commonwealth Ocean Declaration—addressing commitments in areas such as women’s empowerment, youth development, education, health, and ocean biodiversity.
