Brussels, January 20, 2025 – The Europe Today: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim engaged with members of the Malaysian diaspora in Belgium during a gathering held in conjunction with his two-day working visit to the country, which commenced on Sunday, January 19.
The event, attended by approximately 200 Malaysians residing in Belgium, provided an opportunity for the Prime Minister to connect with citizens abroad and emphasize the importance of fostering ties with the global Malaysian community.

The gathering was graced by Malaysia’s ambassador to Belgium, Luxembourg, and the European Union (EU), Datuk Mohd Khalid Abbasi Abdul Razak, along with Sarala Shambulingam, president of the Malaysian Association in Belgium. Joining the Prime Minister were several senior Malaysian officials, including Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz, Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir, and Plantation and Commodities Minister Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani.
In his address, Datuk Mohd Khalid highlighted the contributions of the Malaysian diaspora, noting that around 200 Malaysians are either working or pursuing their studies in Belgium.
“One notable name who could not attend tonight is footballer Luqman Hakim Shamsudin, who has a game tonight,” Mohd Khalid said, referencing the young athlete who made Malaysian football history by signing with Belgian club KV Kortrijk.
Strengthening Connections Abroad
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim commended the Malaysian community for their achievements abroad and encouraged them to continue playing a role in representing Malaysia on the international stage. He also emphasized the government’s commitment to supporting Malaysians living overseas while fostering international cooperation and trade opportunities.
The gathering marked a meaningful conclusion to the first day of the Prime Minister’s working visit to Belgium, underscoring the importance of maintaining strong ties with Malaysians abroad as part of Malaysia’s diplomatic and cultural outreach efforts.
