Jakarta, June 22, 2025 – The Europe Today: Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono announced on Saturday that 96 Indonesian citizens and the Iranian spouse of one Indonesian national have safely arrived in Baku, Azerbaijan, following the successful first phase of evacuation from Iran.
Speaking at a virtual press briefing from Istanbul, where he is attending the Organization of Islamic Cooperation Summit, the minister said the evacuees travelled for 16 hours to reach the border before continuing to Baku. Among them were three staff members of the Indonesian Embassy in Iran.
“Alhamdulillah, the first phase of our evacuation mission has so far gone well,” he stated.
The evacuation comes as part of a broader response to the rapidly escalating conflict between Tehran and Tel Aviv, which began after Israel’s June 13 surprise attacks on Iranian nuclear and military sites. Tehran has since launched retaliatory strikes, with Iranian General Ahmad Vahidi vowing that Operation True Promise III will “continue for as long as necessary.”
According to the Indonesian Defense Forces (TNI), 115 of 386 Indonesian nationals in Iran and 11 of 192 in Israel have registered for evacuation. The group evacuated from Iran departed on Friday, June 20, and will remain in Baku for two nights before flying commercially to Jakarta on Sunday, June 22.
Meanwhile, the TNI confirmed that Indonesians in Israel are being evacuated via Amman, Jordan, and four individuals have already safely reached Jordan. The Foreign Ministry is in ongoing contact with the remaining citizens in Israel to facilitate their safe departure.
