Azerbaijan’s Foreign Ministry Terms Iranian Ambassador to Armenia’s Allegations an Open Provocation

Baku, June 28, 2025 – The Europe Today: The Republic of Azerbaijan has categorically rejected recent statements made by Mehdi Sobhani, Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the Republic of Armenia, regarding alleged military activities conducted from Azerbaijani territory against Iran, including claims of Israeli drones entering Iranian airspace via Azerbaijan.

Aykhan Hajizada, Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan, issued a firm response on Friday, describing the ambassador’s assertions as “baseless and provocative,” and warned that such remarks threaten the foundation of Azerbaijan–Iran bilateral relations.

“These claims undermine the relations between Azerbaijan and Iran, which are built on mutual respect for each other’s territorial integrity, sovereignty, and the principle of non-interference in internal affairs,” Hajizada stated.

He noted that the remarks stand in stark contrast to the positions recently reaffirmed by the leadership of both countries, including during a phone call between President Ilham Aliyev and President Masoud Pezeshkian of Iran, as well as during a separate conversation between the respective foreign ministers.

“In this context, the statements made by the Iranian Ambassador to Armenia are viewed as an open provocation,” Hajizada emphasized.

The Azerbaijani side firmly denied any allegations that its territory or airspace has been used by third-party states to launch military operations against Iran or any other country, calling such accusations devoid of credible evidence and “entirely unfounded.”

“We expect the Iranian side to take appropriate measures regarding this ambassador, who continuously adopts a pro-Armenian stance rather than properly representing his country,” Hajizada added.

The Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry underscored that actions and statements inconsistent with the spirit of bilateral cooperation risk damaging the mutual trust and constructive dialogue that both nations have worked to foster.
