President Tokayev Reaffirms Commitment to UN During Inauguration of Regional SDG Center in Almaty

Almaty, August 3, 2025 – The Europe Today: President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev of Kazakhstan underscored the indispensable role of the United Nations in maintaining global peace and order during a significant event held today at the newly inaugurated UN Regional Center in Almaty.

President Tokayev, alongside UN Secretary-General António Guterres, participated in the official signing ceremony of the Agreement between the Government of Kazakhstan and the United Nations, establishing the UN Regional Center for Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for Central Asia and Afghanistan.

In his address, President Tokayev expressed deep appreciation to the UN Secretary-General for attending what he called a “landmark event,” emphasizing its importance not only for Kazakhstan but for the entire international community.

“This event sends a strong message about the increasing global significance of Central Asia,” Tokayev stated, noting the region’s rising prominence on the world stage. “The Agreement signed today not only institutionalizes the establishment of the Regional SDG Center but also represents a new milestone in the long-standing, constructive cooperation between Kazakhstan and the UN.”

Reflecting on the broader geopolitical context, President Tokayev remarked, “Amid growing geopolitical turbulence, armed conflicts, climate change, and threats to food security, the United Nations must continue to play a key role in fostering a safer and more stable world.”

He reiterated Kazakhstan’s firm support for the UN, declaring, “For Kazakhstan, the United Nations remains an indispensable and fundamental pillar of the international order. Since joining the UN 33 years ago, Kazakhstan has consistently demonstrated its commitment as a responsible, proactive, and peace-loving member of the international community.”

The UN Regional Center aims to enhance coordination and implementation of the SDGs across Central Asia and Afghanistan, contributing to regional stability, sustainable development, and international cooperation.
