Baku, August 14, 2025 – The Europe Today: The Foreign Affairs Committee of the Council of States, the upper chamber of the Swiss Parliament, has rejected draft resolution No. 24.321, titled “Annexation of Nagorno-Karabakh and the Release of Azerbaijan’s Political Prisoners,” originally submitted on November 5, 2024, by several pro-Armenian members of the Geneva Cantonal Parliament. The decision, taken on August 11, 2025, follows concerted efforts by the Embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan to the Swiss Confederation.
According to the Azerbaijani Embassy, an alternative draft decision proposed by Carlo Sommaruga, the Committee’s vice-president known for his biased stance against Azerbaijan, which mentioned only “prisoners” and the “protection of Armenian cultural heritage,” was also removed from the agenda. The move was rejected with five votes against, four in favor, and three abstentions.
In a press release, the Foreign Affairs Committee emphasized that the Geneva Cantonal Parliament’s provocative and one-sided proposal placed demands solely on Azerbaijan, and voiced its objection to such an approach.
The decision underscores what Azerbaijani officials describe as the failure of parliamentarians backed by radical Armenian groups to advance their agenda in the Swiss legislative process.
