Jakarta, October 8, 2025 – The Europe Today: Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Bahlil Lahadalia announced on Tuesday that Indonesia aims to achieve 80 percent energy self-sufficiency by 2029, as part of a broader national effort to strengthen energy security and reduce dependence on imports.
“We are seeking to increase oil and gas lifting and optimally utilize all energy sources that our country has. God willing, in 2029–2030, we can realize at least 80 percent energy self-sufficiency,” Minister Lahadalia said during a press briefing in Jakarta.
To achieve this ambitious target, he emphasized that the government will not rely solely on the state budget, but will also work closely with the private sector and state-owned enterprises (SOEs) to accelerate progress.
“As an example, through PLN (the state electricity company), we will develop solar power plants with a capacity of 80–100 gigawatts (GW). This will be implemented in partnership with foreign investors in collaboration with PLN,” Lahadalia explained.
The minister noted that achieving energy self-sufficiency — a key goal set by President Prabowo Subianto to be realized within the next six years — requires comprehensive measures across multiple sectors.
One of the government’s major initiatives is the mandatory use of B40 biodiesel, a blend of 40 percent biofuel and 60 percent fossil diesel, aimed at reducing diesel imports and promoting domestic renewable energy production. The blend ratio is expected to increase to 45 or 50 percent by 2026, he added.
In addition, the government is reviewing plans to introduce E10 fuel, a 10 percent ethanol blend in gasoline, as part of efforts to further cut fuel imports and promote cleaner, more environmentally friendly fuels.
Supporting the government’s agenda, Pertamina President Director Simon Aloysius Mantiri reaffirmed the company’s commitment to implementing the program, highlighting ongoing efforts to advance green energy solutions.
“Pertamina already has an E5 product, namely Pertamax Green 95, which contains 5 percent ethanol,” Mantiri stated, emphasizing that Pertamina’s initiatives are aligned with the government’s vision to strengthen national energy security and transition toward sustainable energy development.
