Jakarta, December 23, 2025 – The Europe Today: Indonesia’s Ministry of Tourism and Ministry of Environment signed a cooperation agreement on Monday to strengthen environmental management in the tourism sector, tapping into its growing economic potential as travelers increasingly favor eco-friendly options.

The agreement, signed by Tourism Deputy for Industry and Investment Rizki Handayani Mustafa and Environment Deputy for Pollution Control Rasio Ridho Sani, aims to enhance inter-ministerial coordination and boost the competitiveness of national tourism.

Under the collaboration, the ministries will implement programs to help tourism businesses improve their environmental performance. A joint task force will draft guidelines, update assessment criteria, and provide technical assistance on sustainable practices.

Both ministries will also carry out outreach, training, public education, and monitoring initiatives to ensure consistent environmental management across the tourism sector.

“Sharing data and information is crucial, including active involvement from businesses and non-governmental organizations, to make Indonesia’s tourism ecosystem stronger, more inclusive, and competitive,” Rizki said on Tuesday.

Citing the SiteMinder Changing Traveller Report 2025, previous studies show that 95 percent of Indonesian tourists are willing to pay more for environmentally friendly accommodations, with 36 percent ready to pay up to 10 percent more and 35 percent willing to pay up to 25 percent more. This trend underscores the economic potential of sustainable practices in tourism.

Environment Deputy Rasio Ridho Sani highlighted the ministry’s commitment to eco-conscious tourism development and continuous guidance to improve corporate environmental performance.

The cooperation builds on a memorandum of understanding signed by the two ministries on May 13, 2025, providing concrete follow-up actions to accelerate the development of sustainable tourism in Indonesia.
