Nakhon Ratchasima, January 26, 2026 – The Europe Today: Indonesia exceeded expectations at the 2025 ASEAN Para Games, securing a total of 102 gold medals, surpassing its initial target of 82, officials reported on Sunday.

“This achievement has far exceeded expectations,” said Rima Ferdianto, Deputy Secretary General of the National Paralympic Committee of Indonesia. He noted that the medal tally could still increase on the final day of competition.

Ferdianto highlighted that the success is particularly notable as it comes during a period of athlete regeneration. Several members of the Indonesian contingent were competing at the regional level for the first time, forming part of a long-term strategy aimed at preparing for the 2028 Los Angeles Paralympics.

Despite the removal of several traditional sports from this year’s program, Indonesia adapted impressively, finishing the Games with a total of 298 medals: 102 golds, 104 silvers, and 92 bronzes. This strong performance positions the team to finish second overall, behind host nation Thailand.

Para-athletics emerged as the most successful discipline for Indonesia, contributing 39 golds, 39 silvers, and 20 bronzes. Para-swimming followed closely with 22 golds, 28 silvers, and 17 bronzes, while para-judo achieved a remarkable clean sweep, winning all seven gold medals contested.

Indonesia’s para-athletics coach, Setiyo Budi Hartanto, admitted initial concerns over the challenging conditions in Thailand. “At first, I was a bit pessimistic because many of our mainstay sports were not contested, and there were some difficult classification mergers. But the athletes adapted well, and the results have been excellent,” he said.

The Indonesian contingent’s outstanding performance underscores the country’s growing strength in para-sports and its commitment to nurturing the next generation of elite athletes.
