Denmark to Reopen Embassy in Syria After 14-Year Closure

Denmark

Copenhagen, February 1, 2026 — The Europe Today: Denmark has announced plans to reopen its embassy in Syria during the current year, marking the end of a 14-year closure, according to a statement published on Friday by the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen told the Foreign Policy Committee in Copenhagen that the Danish embassy in Damascus, which has been closed since 2012, will resume operations in 2026. He said the move would allow Denmark to monitor developments in Syria more closely and engage in a constructive manner.

Rasmussen noted that reopening the embassy would also help strengthen cooperation with the Syrian government in several areas, including efforts related to the return of displaced Syrians to their homeland.

The foreign minister added that he had discussed the issue with Syria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, Asaad Hassan al-Shaibani, during his visit to Damascus in November last year.

The decision reflects Denmark’s intention to enhance diplomatic engagement and better assess political and humanitarian developments in Syria through a renewed on-the-ground presence.
