Beirut, February 17, 2026 – The Europe Today: Frank-Walter Steinmeier on Monday reaffirmed Germany’s continued support for Lebanon, stating that Berlin would stand by the country even after the conclusion of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) mission.
Speaking after a meeting with Joseph Aoun, Steinmeier emphasized Germany’s backing of the Lebanese Armed Forces and pledged assistance in rebuilding infrastructure damaged by conflict, with support from international partners.
The German president said his visit aimed to encourage both Hezbollah and Israel to adhere strictly to the ceasefire agreement currently in place. He stressed that the disarmament of Hezbollah should proceed in parallel with the withdrawal of Israeli troops from southern Lebanon, according to Lebanon’s National News Agency (NNA).
For his part, President Aoun underscored the importance of national unity, stating that it can only be achieved through full independence and the exclusive authority of the Lebanese state over all its territory. He reiterated Lebanon’s determination to rebuild the country through its own will and capabilities, supported by friendly nations.
A ceasefire agreement between Hezbollah and Israel has been in effect since Nov. 27, 2024. Despite the truce, Israel has continued to conduct occasional strikes in Lebanon, asserting that the operations target Hezbollah-linked threats.
The discussions highlighted ongoing international efforts to stabilize southern Lebanon and reinforce state institutions amid fragile regional security dynamics.
