Addis Ababa, March 10, 2026 – The Europe Today: The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, on Monday warned that the ongoing military escalation in the Persian Gulf poses a serious threat to both regional and global economic stability.
In a statement, Youssouf said he was closely monitoring developments in the region, describing the situation as marked by “concerning incidents that are escalating tensions and undermining regional stability,” according to media reports.
The AU chief expressed deep concern over recent attacks targeting critical infrastructure, including energy and transport facilities, noting that such incidents have further intensified tensions and risk destabilizing global markets.
He emphasized that the attacks are disrupting vital supply chains and could have far-reaching consequences for international trade and energy markets. Youssouf also condemned violations of international law, including actions that undermine the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states.
Calling for restraint, the chairperson urged all parties involved to prioritize dialogue and diplomacy and to work toward a rapid de-escalation of tensions in accordance with the principles of the United Nations Charter.
“Rising oil prices and disruptions in trade routes are already affecting markets, including the export of perishables from Africa, while disruptions to airspace are impacting African airlines and travel connectivity,” he said.
Youssouf reaffirmed the commitment of the 55-member African Union to uphold international law, promote the peaceful resolution of disputes, and safeguard international peace and security.
