Australia Unveils Major Gambling Reforms to Protect Public and Sports Integrity

Australia

Canberra, April 3, 2026 – The Europe Today: The Australian Government, led by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, has announced sweeping reforms aimed at curbing gambling-related harm by tightening regulations on advertising, online products, and illegal operators, according to media reports.

Under the proposed measures, television advertisements for betting agencies will be capped at three per hour between 6:00 AM and 8:30 PM, while gambling ads during live sports broadcasts will be banned within the same time frame. Additionally, radio advertisements will be removed during school drop-off and pick-up hours to limit exposure to younger audiences.

The reforms also introduce stricter controls on digital platforms, allowing online gambling advertisements only for verified users aged over 18, with the option to opt out. Promotions featuring sports personalities or celebrities, along with gambling advertisements in stadiums and on team uniforms, will also be prohibited.

Prime Minister Albanese emphasized the importance of protecting children from gambling exposure, stating that the government does not want young Australians associating sports with betting activities.

Further measures include a ban on online Keno-style products, often referred to as “pocket pokies,” and intensified action against illegal offshore gambling websites. The government also plans to harmonize match-fixing laws nationwide to safeguard the integrity of Australian sport.

In addition, the BetStop program will be expanded, alongside increased financial counselling services and public awareness initiatives to support individuals affected by gambling.

The government is expected to introduce legislation to implement the reforms, which are scheduled to come into effect on January 1, 2027.
