Baku, May 3, 2026 – The Europe Today: Initiated by the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, the “Baku Marathon 2026” kicked off today, evolving from a traditional sporting event into a vibrant citywide festival that blends athletics with entertainment and culture.
The event began at State Flag Square, which was transformed into a lively hub early in the morning as thousands of participants gathered, including diplomats, media personalities, and notable figures from the cultural and scientific communities. For the first time since its inception in 2016, the marathon has been expanded to a full 42.195-kilometer race, concluding at Sea Breeze Resort.
Previously known for its half-marathon format, this year’s edition marks a significant milestone, reflecting the growing scale and international appeal of the event. The race route offers a scenic journey through key parts of the capital, including Primorsky Boulevard, White City Baku, and Heydar Aliyev Avenue, before heading toward the coastline.
The marathon atmosphere extends beyond the race itself. A fan zone at the стартing point will remain active throughout the day, featuring live performances under the motto “Even if you don’t run – don’t miss the fun.” The musical lineup includes leading Azerbaijani artists such as Aygun Kazimova, Tunzale Agayeva, and Eldar Gasimov alongside Nigar Jamal. Celebrations continue at the finish line with performances by DJ Came, Meri Band, and Ellai.
To support participants, 20 entertainment and service stations have been set up along the route, offering water, medical assistance, and motivational support. Volunteers and mascots are also present to celebrate runners as they cross the finish line.
The marathon has drawn participants from across the globe, including the United States, United Kingdom, China, Germany, Türkiye, Russia, and Kazakhstan, highlighting its growing international profile. The event also emphasizes inclusivity, welcoming participants with physical disabilities and individuals with Down syndrome.
A prize pool has been announced for top finishers, with 6,000 AZN awarded for first place, 4,000 AZN for second, and 2,000 AZN for third. All full marathon finishers will receive medals, while additional recognitions include awards for half-marathon and 10-kilometer participants, as well as special categories for students, corporate teams, and senior runners.
The Baku Marathon 2026 stands as a testament to the city’s ambition to merge sport, culture, and community into a single, large-scale celebration.
