Tokyo, May 16, 2026 — The Europe Today: Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said on Friday that she and U.S. President Donald Trump reaffirmed the “ironclad” alliance between Japan and the United States during a telephone conversation held shortly after Trump concluded his two-day visit to China.
According to Takaichi, President Trump joined the call from aboard Air Force One following the completion of his official engagements in China.
Speaking to reporters after the conversation, Takaichi said the two leaders exchanged views on issues related to China, including economic and security matters, and reaffirmed the importance of maintaining close coordination on Indo-Pacific affairs.
“We exchanged views on issues surrounding China, including the economy and security, and reaffirmed close communication on Indo-Pacific issues,” Takaichi stated.
The Japanese Prime Minister also confirmed that the leaders discussed issues concerning Iran, during which she shared Japan’s position on the matter with the U.S. President.
However, Takaichi declined to comment on whether the issue of Taiwan was discussed during the conversation.
She further noted that President Trump provided her with a detailed briefing regarding his visit to China, while emphasizing that the contents of the discussion would remain confidential.
