European Parliament Condemns Human Rights Situation in Iran

Parliament

Brussels, May 22, 2026 – The Europe Today: The European Parliament on Thursday adopted a resolution condemning the worsening human rights situation in Iran and called for stronger international measures, including additional sanctions and enhanced accountability mechanisms.

Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) expressed solidarity with the Iranian people, stating that the country is witnessing what they described as the largest mass killing of protesters in its history.

The resolution strongly condemned the use of the death penalty as a tool to suppress political mobilisation and called for its complete abolition.

MEPs also denounced the reported secret executions of dissidents carried out in March and April, including executions involving minors, and urged Iranian authorities to immediately release all political prisoners.

The parliament further called on the European Union to expand sanctions against Iranian officials accused of involvement in repression, including members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and entities linked to Iran’s Supreme Leader.

According to the resolution, members of the IRGC and their close family members should be barred from entering EU countries.

MEPs also urged EU member states to shut down Iranian diplomatic missions allegedly connected to transnational repression activities and ensure the full implementation of sanctions measures.
