Hanoi, June 29, 2026 – The Europe Today: Vietnam’s Level-2 Field Hospital No. 7 has been awarded the United Nations Medal in recognition of its outstanding contribution to the United Nations peacekeeping mission in South Sudan, marking another milestone in the country’s growing role in international peacekeeping operations.
The medal presentation ceremony was held at the hospital in Bentiu and was attended by Junhui Wu, Force Commander of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS); Syed Wajahat Hussain Naqvi, UNMISS Sector North Commander; Sam Korutaro Muhumure; representatives of UNMISS agencies and units; and international guests.
The United Nations peacekeeping medal was presented to all 63 members of the hospital in recognition of their dedication and valuable service during their deployment in South Sudan.
Addressing the ceremony, Major General Junhui Wu said Vietnam has become one of the United Nations’ most respected peacekeeping contributors since deploying its first Level-2 Field Hospital to Bentiu in 2018.
He noted that over the past seven years, Vietnamese field hospitals have consistently demonstrated professionalism, high medical expertise, and unwavering commitment to both the peacekeeping mission and the local community. He added that Level-2 Field Hospital No. 7 has successfully upheld this tradition through its exemplary performance.
“The achievements recognised today belong to every member of Level-2 Field Hospital No. 7. Whether serving as commanders, doctors, nurses, technicians or logistics personnel, each individual has played a vital role in the success of this deployment,” Wu said.
He also praised the hospital’s personnel as outstanding representatives of the Vietnam People’s Army, highlighting their discipline, professional competence, and strong sense of responsibility.
Brigadier General Syed Wajahat Hussain Naqvi described the Vietnamese hospital as a cornerstone of UNMISS’s medical support system, commending its delivery of high-quality healthcare services, including routine treatment, emergency care, life-saving surgeries, and specialized medical services for peacekeepers operating under challenging conditions.
He further praised the hospital’s humanitarian outreach initiatives, including medical assistance, health education programmes, and support for vulnerable communities, saying these efforts reflected the humanitarian values of United Nations peacekeepers.
On behalf of the unit, Lieutenant Colonel Dr. Trần Đức Tài expressed gratitude to Vietnam’s Ministry of National Defence, the Vietnam Department of Peacekeeping Operations, UNMISS leadership, the Northern Sector Command, the Bentiu Field Office, and partner units for their continued support in enabling the hospital to successfully accomplish its mission.
During nearly one year of deployment in South Sudan, the hospital has maintained round-the-clock medical and emergency services for UN peacekeepers, UN personnel, and local residents. It has treated thousands of patients, successfully conducted numerous emergency procedures and surgeries, carried out medical evacuation (MEDEVAC) missions, provided dental care, and delivered specialized treatment to patients from multiple countries, reinforcing Vietnam’s reputation as a committed contributor to global peacekeeping and humanitarian efforts.
