Indonesia Promotes Palm Oil-Based Bioenergy Cooperation with Russia

Jakarta, July 12, 2026 – The Europe Today: Indonesia has reaffirmed its ambition to become a global leader in palm oil-based bioenergy by promoting innovation, downstream industrial development, and strategic cooperation with Russia and countries across the Eurasian region. The initiative was highlighted during the “Palm Oil and the Future of Sustainable Energy” forum held as part of the INNOPROM 2026 industrial exhibition in Yekaterinburg, Russia.

Industry Minister Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita said Indonesia’s participation in the forum reflects the government’s commitment to expanding international market access for domestic industries through stronger global partnerships. He emphasized that palm oil should serve not only as a driver of Indonesia’s economy but also as a solution for energy security and sustainable industrial development through innovation, value-added processing, and international collaboration.

As the world’s largest producer of palm oil, Indonesia showcased its progress in developing bioenergy and highlighted the implementation of its mandatory B50 biodiesel programme, which came into effect in July 2026. The programme increases the palm oil content in biodiesel from 40 percent to 50 percent and is expected to significantly boost domestic crude palm oil consumption while reducing dependence on imported fossil fuels.

During the forum, Indonesian officials also outlined measures to ensure the sustainability of the country’s palm oil industry, including the replanting of smallholder plantations, human resource development, advances in biodiesel technology, and the strengthening of the Indonesian Sustainable Palm Oil (ISPO) certification system to meet international environmental standards.

Director General of Industrial Resilience, Zoning, and International Industrial Access, Tri Supondy, said the event provided an important platform to demonstrate Indonesia’s industrial readiness to support the global energy transition while fostering mutually beneficial partnerships with Russia and other Eurasian countries. He noted that deeper cooperation in bioenergy could enhance sustainable industrial development and create new opportunities for trade and investment.
