Moscow, September 11, 2026 – The Europe Today: Fifth-generation (5G) communications have officially been launched in Russia on the instructions of President Vladimir Putin, the Ministry of Digital Development, Communications and Mass Media has announced.
The ministry described 5G as a comprehensive technological ecosystem intended to support the digital transformation of the Russian economy. It said the introduction of the new standard would not only increase mobile internet speeds but also create opportunities for a wide range of advanced applications.
According to the ministry, 5G technology can be used to operate autonomous vehicles and robotic systems, advance telemedicine, support industrial digitalization and facilitate other innovative applications.
The initial stage of the rollout will involve the operation of 5G networks on frequencies previously allocated to telecommunications operators for LTE services.
Telecommunications companies have also been allocated the 4.63–4.99 GHz frequency band for fifth-generation communications. The frequency spectrum was distributed free of charge and in equal shares among operators.
The ministry said the allocation mechanism would help maintain a high level of competition in the telecommunications market and contribute to ensuring affordable tariffs for consumers.
The launch marks a significant step in Russia’s efforts to expand advanced communications infrastructure and accelerate the digitalization of various sectors of the economy.
