Indonesia Eyes Becoming Asia’s Hydrogen Hub to Support Clean Energy Transition

Jakarta, July 23, 2026 – The Europe Today: Indonesia has significant potential to become Asia’s leading hub for hydrogen production, trade and development as low-carbon energy production expands, infrastructure improves and regional demand for clean energy continues to grow, the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources said on Wednesday.

Speaking in Jakarta, Head of the Ministry’s Human Resources Development Agency (BPSDM), Prahoro Nurtjahyo, said the global energy transition has entered a new phase that extends beyond expanding renewable electricity generation to supplying clean energy for hard-to-decarbonise sectors such as heavy industry, shipping, logistics and transportation.

He described hydrogen as a key solution capable of linking the energy, industrial and transportation sectors within a single low-carbon ecosystem.

Prahoro said hydrogen development is not only essential for Indonesia’s goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2060 but also supports the country’s broader development priorities, including energy self-sufficiency, industrial downstreaming and enhanced economic competitiveness.

He noted that the government’s hydrogen strategy is in line with President Prabowo Subianto’s Asta Cita vision, which seeks to strengthen national energy security, promote value-added industrial development and improve Indonesia’s economic resilience.

According to the official, Indonesia has established a clear policy framework for the sector through the National Hydrogen and Ammonia Roadmap and Government Regulation No. 40 of 2025 on National Energy Policy.

These policies identify hydrogen and ammonia as strategic new energy sources to support decarbonisation in the industrial, electricity generation and transportation sectors.

Prahoro stressed, however, that the success of Indonesia’s hydrogen industry will depend not only on increasing production capacity but also on developing a fully integrated ecosystem linking production, storage, distribution and end-use.

He said building such an ecosystem would be critical to positioning Indonesia as a regional leader in the emerging hydrogen economy while supporting sustainable economic growth and the country’s long-term energy transition goals.
