Rabat, August 02, 2026 – The Europe Today: The Moroccan Association for Human Rights (AMDH) has called for an independent and transparent investigation into the recent deadly incidents at the Ceuta and Melilla border crossings, urging authorities to establish accountability and protect the rights of migrants following one of the deadliest migration crises in the region in recent years.
In a statement issued after the events of July 30–31, the rights organization expressed deep concern over the loss of life and injuries suffered by migrants attempting to reach the Spanish enclaves of Ceuta and Melilla. AMDH argued that the tragedy reflected broader social and economic challenges driving irregular migration and called for urgent measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
The organization urged Moroccan authorities to launch an impartial investigation into the circumstances surrounding the deaths and injuries, identify those responsible, and ensure accountability in accordance with national and international human rights standards. It also appealed for greater transparency regarding the official response to the crisis.
AMDH further stressed the need to safeguard the dignity and fundamental rights of migrants, emphasizing that migration management should be guided by humanitarian principles and respect for international law. The group warned that the absence of timely official communication had contributed to uncertainty surrounding the events.
The appeal comes amid heightened international attention to the humanitarian consequences of the recent border crossings. International organizations, including human rights groups, have also called for the protection of migrants and thorough investigations into the deaths reported during the crisis.
The latest developments have reignited debate over migration management, border security, and human rights at the European Union’s external frontiers, with both Moroccan and Spanish authorities facing growing calls for coordinated action to prevent further loss of life.
