Washington, August 03, 2026 – The Europe Today: Thousands of residents have been evacuated and hundreds of structures destroyed as fast-moving wildfires continued to burn unchecked in eastern Washington state, placing further strain on firefighting resources across the western United States.
According to authorities, approximately 5,000 homes have been evacuated, while around 600 homes, businesses, and other buildings have been destroyed by the fires, which remained uncontained on Sunday.
The wildfires, burning in and around Spokane, Washington’s second-largest city, have scorched nearly 8.2 square miles (about 21 square kilometres) of land. The blazes are among dozens of active wildfires across the western United States that have stretched the capabilities of federal, state, and local firefighting agencies.
Meanwhile, firefighting crews continued for the 10th consecutive day to battle another major wildfire spanning western Idaho and eastern Oregon. Supported by bulldozers and helicopters, emergency responders are working to contain the blaze, which has already consumed nearly 525 square miles (approximately 1,360 square kilometres) of grassland.
Authorities continue to monitor the rapidly evolving wildfire situation as firefighters work to protect lives, property, and critical infrastructure amid challenging weather and fire conditions across the region.
